Inequalities in Milton Keynes
The Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board (BLMK ICB) asked us to carry out this research, alongside similar research that was carried out by other community partners in our city.
This research report forms part of the evidence in the Denny Review.
Background: the Denny Review
The ICB commissioned the Reverend Lloyd Denny, from Luton, to undertake a review of health inequalities in Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes. During a first phase of this project, the University of Sheffield was asked to undertake a literature review. This literature review brought together both national and local research and reports into a single report evidencing historical health inequalities in Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes, the people within our communities who faced the greatest health inequalities, under-representation, and themes of their biggest barriers.
In August 2022, the ICS asked us, the three other local Healthwatch, and community and voluntary groups to deliver a second stage of the project which included in-depth engagement and listening activities to capture experiences of health inequalities within specific groups identified in the literature review.
Working in collaboration
We worked alongside YMCA Milton Keynes and Community Action: Milton Keynes to document and explore the themes from the literature review, specifically in Milton Keynes. Together, we wanted to:
- Provide the ICS with useful, relevant, specific insight into the experiences of people in Milton Keynes.
- Offer a detailed picture of existing data from charity and community partners.
- Offer detailed insight into the intersectional nature of inequalities with specific communities.
